CAREER: Cover Letter checklist (printable)

The cover letter is the first thing a prospective employer will read when you apply for a job. Writing a letter which is grabbing and encourages them to review your resume can make the difference between getting a job and not.

• Address the letter directly to someone if possible, avoiding generic “to whom it may concern”
• Use sample cover letters for guidance, but do not copy exactly the wording. Write in your own words
• Use terminology common in your industry
• Make sure you spell check the letter
• Use the cover letter as an example of your professionalism
• Write three paragraphs: introduction, body, closing
• The introduction should state the position you are applying for and your direct interest in the position
• The body should include specific items from your resume that make you a great candidate
• The body should also include any additional information such as a start date, certifications, etc.
• The closing should summarize the letter briefly and state your next steps (wait for their reply usually)
• Use “Sincerely,” at the bottom
• Always personally sign the cover letter
