COMMUNICATION: Email Principles checklist (printable)
Most people seem to get drowned in e-mails. Here are 5 worthwhile steps to remember:
1. REMEMBER TO DELETE YOUR E-MAILS. If you save your responses, remember a copy of the mail you received is in your "Sent" box.
2. DON'T CHECK FOR MAILS EVERY MINUTE. It's stressing, and really urgent matters should be handled by the phone. Set your timing to e.g. once every 60 minutes (Tim Ferris in in his book, "The Four Hour Work Week" even suggests twice a day, www.4hourworkweek.com (not sponsored).
3. GET FAMILIAR WITH YOUR MAIL PROGRAM'S possibilities to filter and prioritize incoming messages.
4. BE CAREFUL ABOUT HOW MANY YOU "CC".
5. CHECK AND MINIMISE THE NEWSLETTERS YOU ARE RECEIVING - or create a special free account (or one for each type of publication) for the newsletters and check in on them once a week. List the ones you receive and delete yourself from the lists you don't REALLY spend time on anyway.
6. BE SPECIFIC IN THE "SUBJECT" LINE. It makes it easier to manage e-mails in your inbox. Include only one subject per e-mail. If the subject changes or expands, start a new e-mail - or more - with a new subject line.
