COMMUNICATION: Expert Interview checklist (printable)

Being interviewed on a subject usually means you are an authority on a topic. Use the opportunity of your interview to demonstrate to the interviewer as well as the audience this knowledge you possess. Interviews are done for several purposes: television talk shows, TV news, web video, radio show, podcast, newspaper or magazine article, or a testimonial. Regardless of the medium, always do the following:

• Be polite to the interviewer and thank them for talking to you
• Know the purpose and duration of the interview
• Prepare answers in advance if possible
• Think for a few seconds before responding to questions
• Have a glass of water handy for lengthy interviews
• Keep answers moderately simple, you are the expert, not everyone in the audience is
• Speak with authority
• Speak with energy and enthusiasm
• Use the interviewers name when responding to them
• Never talk down to the audience
• Tell the audience something you want them to know that they wouldn’t otherwise know
• After the interview is complete, ask when you will see it on air, printed, etc.
• Follow up with a thank you note to the interviewer
