FINANCE: Equity checklist (printable)

Equity can mean many things depending on the situation. In the world of accounting, Equity represents the claim that investors have on all of the assets less liabilities.


* Equity is shown on the company Balance Sheet
* Liabilities plus Equity must equal Assets
* Equity can be broken into several subsets of Equity
* Shareholders equity is another name for Equity
* Shares represent the number of shares at their par value
* Shares can be Common or Preferred
* Additional Paid In Capital represents the difference between what was paid for shares and the par value
* Additional Paid in Capital is also called APIC
* Retained Earnings represents the cumulative profit or loss from all prior years of operation
* Net Income represents the current periods profit or loss
* The equity section of a balance sheet will not list out specific details about shareholders and what they paid individually
* A separate Schedule of Equity is usually prepared to show further detail and the changes in equity
