MANAGEMENT: Promotions checklist

Giving promotions to employees can be exciting, but also an involved process.

* Consider the pros and cons of each employee to be considered
* Clearly define what the promoted position entails
* Make it a positive experience for the employee
* Don't focus just on any raise, also the title and responsibilities
* Realize other employees might be disappointed they didn't get promoted
* Anticipate how the new promotion will affect your organization chart
* Put in place guidelines to measure the promoted employees effectiveness
* Be sure to handle all human resource paperwork to make the promotion official
* Announce the promotion company wide to both praise the employee and inform the organization
